Participate in C.A.N.S. Around the Oval

CANS 2022

Once you have registered, you may begin earning Friendly Competition Points. Teams may compete internally, externally, and overall! Challenge your coworkers, school rivals, and/or friends while trying to raise the most funds and give the most food – and enjoy the friendly competition along the way.  Teams may consist of 2 or more people.  By registering a team you will be provided a unique online donation portal. The Overall Competitions will occur within your specific team category and for best overall.  Team Categories are CSU College/Department, CSU Student Group, Off-Campus Community Organization, and Local Schools.

Have fun! Enjoy! Good luck.

Friendly competition points can be earned in the following ways:

  • 5 points per pound of food donated to SLiCE on October 19th at the collection event on The CSU Oval
  • 10 points per dollar donated (whether cash, coin, check, or ideally online)
  • 25 points per team member who attends a “CANversation series” – our thematic hybrid sessions. More information will be sent to registered teams.

We prefer financial donations to be submitted online, if possible.   If you are unable to do so, but still want to give a monetary donation, the following are other options.

Drop-Off Process: all funds would need to be dropped off at the SLiCE Office (Lory Student Center 210) when we our office is open to the public (Monday – Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm). On Oct. 19th (C.A.N.S. event day!) donations will be accepted at The Oval from 8:00 – 2:00.  Please do not mail monetary donations.

    • Cash: bring your exact change please. A receipt will be provided.
    • Check: make checks payable to “Food Bank for Larimer County” and add “C.A.N.S. Around the Oval 2020” to the memo line.  A SLiCE Receptionist will provide a receipt for tracking purposes.

Tax Receipt: a receipt will be issued for your donation for tracking purposes when dropped off with a SLiCE Receptionist.  However, if a tax receipt is requested, please know it is issued directly from the Food Bank for Larimer County and will be sent after C.A.N.S. Around the Oval.

    • All donations to the Food Bank for Larimer County are tax-deductible as provided by law.  No goods or services will be returned to the donor in exchange for their donation.

Dollars Make a Differencedon’t forget that every $1 donated equals 2 meals of food that CAN be provided to Food Bank for Larimer County clients.

  • All proceeds go directly to the Food Bank for Larimer County.

In-person volunteering can occur at one of their three locations: northern Fort Collins, northern Loveland, and eastern Loveland off I-25 just north of Centerra Shops.

Volunteering can occur throughout the year. Learn more about their current volunteer opportunities and/or apply to volunteer, today!

During World Food Week (October 12 – 16, 2020), SLiCE hosted five “CANversations Around Food” on Zoom.  Each session focused on hunger-relief efforts within our local community and well beyond.  Some discussed the importance of agri-food and environmental sustainability, while others discussed food waste, food rescue, and food distribution, and all spoke about the importance of human nutrition and food security.  Each session was recorded, and edited with customized closed captioning.  A description of each session is below, along with access to the recording on YouTube.

  • CANversation about CSU’s Food Security Pilot Project – Learn more from one of CSU’s off-campus farms and horticulture field research locations on their commitment to responding to food insecurity and human health.  Staff from the Agricultural Research, Development, and Education Center (ARDEC-South) spotlight their Food Security Pilot Project, which provides fruits and vegetables for distribution at CSU’s Food Pantry. (33 minutes)
    •
  • CANversation about the Value of SNAP Benefits  Learn about SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, which provide nutrition benefits to supplement one’s food budget.  Those who qualify can get up to $204 a month for a single household.  Students awarded work-study are often eligible.  An overview of this hunger-relief resource is shared, along with how to best apply at CSU and via the Food Bank for Larimer County. (28 minutes)
    •
  • CANversation with Rams Against Hunger Staff – Get a taste of what it’s like to work with Rams Against Hunger and CSU’s “Mobile” Food Pantry. Panelists include Rams Against Hunger staff, and ASCSU’s Director of Health.  Through engaging storytelling and personal observations, these panelists will bring the Rams Against Hunger program to life by sharing its history, how it recently evolved during COVID, its newer hunger-relief resources, and the noticeable impact of the food pantry within the CSU community. (40 minutes)
    •
  • CANversation with Food-Based Student Organizations – Be a part of a panel conversation with different registered student organizations committed to combatting local hunger, feeding local/national/global populations, and/or human health and nutrition.  The panelists spoke about these specific topics, with each student organization representative providing a quick overview of their organization, how students can join, and the types of community-based activities the student organization tends to do – both pre-COVID and during the pandemic. (36 minutes)
  • Closing CANversation with SLiCE and the Food Bank for Larimer County – Join partners from the SLiCE office and the Food Bank for Larimer County who together coordinated C.A.N.S. Around The Oval 2020 for the closing remarks of the 30-day food/fund drive and 34-year-old CSU tradition.  Hear some major gratitude for all of the “CANtribution” milestones met. Learn about where donated food ends up both on-campus and throughout Northern Colorado and how each dollar donated is transformed into two times the meals.  Also, get more information about the numerous physically distanced and virtual volunteering opportunities available via the food bank. (25 minutes)
