School is Cool, a community outreach program, provides essential school supplies to students in need across the Poudre School District.
At the beginning of August, backpacks are filled with supplies and given to 46 different schools in the PSD across Fort Collins, Timnath, LaPorte, Wellington and mountain schools. Since 1992, the program has donated supplies to more than 36,000 students. Last year, School is Cool assisted 2,531 students. The goal for 2016-2017 is to provide supplies for 2,500 students.
School is Cool pushes the community grow towards equal opportunity education, but the program needs your help. The demand for school supplies remains high. Current figures from the PSD reveal that around 32 percent of students in the district are eligible for the free and reduced lunch program. Roughly, that’s 8,700 students in kindergarten through grade 12. A donation of $25 provides a brand-new backpack with 13 school supplies for such students. Volunteering and donations are greatly appreciated!
Along with providing school supplies, the program works to grow students’ self-esteem. The outreach program helps students achieve academic goals and grow in the community. School is Cool is organized and manage by Colorado State University employees. It would not be possible without the help of the Bohemian Foundation, CostCo and the CSU Bookstore.
