Local Neighbors

CSUnity sends CSU Rams to support older adult neighbors and neighbors with disabilities living in Fort Collins and needing help with outdoor work they cannot complete themselves or afford to pay others.  We ask neighbors to please consider if you can pay for your yard work, ask a friend or relative for help, or are able to complete it yourself, instead of participating in CSUnity.  While we never want to turn away anyone who will benefit from CSUnity, we do ask you to determine this before requesting volunteers.  Please check out our alternatives to CSUnity that could be pursued in place of CSUnity, or in addition to, and on a more ongoing basis.

The greatest change to our CSUnity registration process that started in 2023 is that we are no longer able to accept registrations over the phone.  Sadly, we no longer have the staffing abilities to offer this service anymore.  We hope you can adapt with us as we transition to more of a paper registration and online registration model.

  1. Mail Your Paper Registration to SLiCE: if you received a paper registration in the mail, place the completed paper registration form in the provided pre-stamped and pre-addressed envelope, and mail it back early. (Paper registration forms are only sent out once via a bulk mailing process, we will not send paper registration forms on-demand thereafter.)
  2. Submit Online Neighbor Registration Form: complete the online form, click the “NEXT” button at the bottom until all pages are complete, and click the “SUBMIT” button to ensure your registration is submitted correctly.

Approved Projects: Projects are approved due to volunteer availability, scope, and content of the project, and cooperation with SLiCE.  If matched with volunteers, your CSUnity Team Leader will call you to go over any project changes on your end and confirm their Volunteer Team’s attendance. Please anticipate receiving a call from an unknown number, and make sure your voicemail is not full.  If the Team Leader misses you on the phone, they are instructed to leave a voicemail with their phone number. Save their phone number so you can be sure to connect.  If you do not hear from your assigned Team Leader, please let SLiCE know at 970-491-0374, and we will try to expedite the process for you.

Waitlisted Projects: If SLiCE must waitlist your project due to reaching capacity, we will notify you in April.  Otherwise, you can anticipate your registered project has been approved.

If you want to participate in CSUnity as a local neighbor, the following need to be acknowledged.

  • Participation in CSUnity is not guaranteed, nor are volunteers. (Projects are approved due to volunteer availability, scope and content of the project, and cooperation with SLiCE.)
  • Registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • You, or a neighbor/friend/relative, must be home when volunteers are present.
  • All service projects at your home must occur outside (primarily yard work/outdoor cleaning).
  • Service projects must be completed within 4 hours or less; projects may not fully be completed by CSU Volunteers and that is okay. If your residence is a decent drive from campus, shorten the project length to make time for travel.
  • We will strive to match the number of volunteers you requested, but please anticipate about 25% of volunteers not to show up. You will have an assigned Volunteer Team Leader who will attend and will call you before CSUnity to ensure you are on the same page.  If the Team Leader misses you on the phone, they are instructed to leave a voicemail with their phone number. Save their phone number so you can be sure to connect by Mon, 4/18.
  • We cannot guarantee CSU volunteers are fully vaccinated from COVID-19.
  • You must provide all necessary resources (i.e. garden/yard tools, cleaning supplies, trash bags, etc.)  SLiCE provides gloves.  If you do not have all the materials you need, consider asking a neighbor, but do not expect those services to occur if tools are not provided by you.
  • Volunteers are not experts or trained. Requested tasks should be quick to learn & teach (you are expected to train volunteers on what you need), and flexibility with results is asked.
  • Volunteers cannot do construction work with chainsaws, nail guns, or any other power tools.
  • Volunteers will not turn on your water valve for your sprinkler system.
  • SLiCE and CSU Volunteers will not remove items from your property, you are responsible for your own yard waste disposal.
  • Your home must be located within Fort Collins.
  • If you know a Fort Collins resident who qualifies for CSUnity assistance, have them visit this website to register separately. Volunteer Teams cannot be sent to additional yards for help the day of, unless that neighbor is registered.
  • If you wish to cancel your own project, please notify SLiCE and your Volunteer Team Leader.  Volunteers are not required to make up the service project if there is severe winter weather and SLiCE must cancel the event.  This is because the following weeks occur finals.
  • Please spend the first 30 minutes of your service project: greeting all volunteers, sharing the value of their service work for you, building a meaningful connection, training them on your yard work projects, explaining your exact expectations, and being sure they understand your needs before starting.

Below are some community resources that may be able to assist you with your outdoor yard work.  Considering CSUnity is once a year, here are ongoing, local resources for more year-round support or in place of CSUnity.

Larimer County’s Office on Aging offers several different voucher programs providing funding and services to older adults in Larimer County who may need assistance with chores, lawn mowing, snow removal, exterior house cleaning and repairs, and indoor cleaning or moving.  The Chore Voucher (or Home/Yard Work Reimbursement) Program provides funding to low-income seniors and is designed to increase safety and help neighbors perform tasks around their homes due to limited physical ability or endurance.  Funding may partially or fully cover services.  Learn more: here or call 970-498-7750.
