The Annual Student Art Exhibition hosted by Colorado State University’s Curfman
Gallery is the longest running recurring exhibition at CSU. The exhibition is open to all
current Colorado State University students, both undergraduate and graduate, and
serves to highlight the creative efforts of the student body. This year, 321 applications
to the exhibition were received, more than ever before, and 34 pieces were chosen by
the jurors. This year’s exhibition was juried by UNC Director of galleries Belle-Pilar
Fleming and artist Lelani Derr.

About the Jurors:

Belle-Pilar Fleming is a printmaker, curator, and textile artist from Southern Ohio.
She holds a BA in Psychology from Warren Wilson College and an MFA in printmaking
from Ohio University. She is a former Artist-in-Residency at the Black Church Print
Studio in Dublin, Ireland, and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. In her
artistic works, Fleming focuses on the lived experience of individuals across a spectrum
of identity and place. Utilizing personal Narrative, ethnography. Archival source
materials and data visualization, she investigates the role of the artist as a community
historian and the social-cultural contexts that shape our behavior.

Leilani Nobuku Derr is a visual artist and designer in Denver who explores
thought-provoking themes through a lens of whimsical multiculturalism and surreal
illustration. Her work delves into how we use myth and folklore to find place,
belonging, and understanding in our modern culture. She draws upon inspiration from
an interweaving of her multicultural “hapa” upbringing, relentless curiosity, and the
power of artist advocacy.
She received her BA at Coastal Carolina University, where she specialized in graphic
design and printmaking. Since moving to Colorado in 2010, she has spent much of her
creative career designing branding agencies and marketing departments for which
she’s been the recipient of multiple ADDY and SPJ awards. Her passion for public art
expanded during a decade of work as Creative Lead of Art and Design in Adams
County, CO, Public Libraries. While working as a designer for the seven-branch district
of north Denver, she specialized in art direction and helped to launch community art
initiatives, partnering with local artists and organizations.
