June 16th – July 24th, 2026
Curfman Gallery, Lory Student Center
In collaboration with the Pianos About Town Project, The LSC Arts Program presents Painted Notes – a collection of painted pianos and piano backs, all completed by CSU alumni.
Pianos About Town was established in 2010 and is a collaborative project between the City of Fort Collins Art in Public Places Program, Bohemian Foundation, and the Downtown Development Authority. To date, 191 murals have been painted for Pianos About Town.
The project serves to combine art and music for the enjoyment of the Fort Collins community. Every June through October, commissioned local artists paint these pianos in Old Town Square where the public can interact with artists as they work. The completed pianos then rotate to various locations throughout Fort Collins, inviting people to admire artwork and play a tune.
When pianos are initially prepared to paint, a plywood panel is applied to the back to give mural artists a better surface. When pianos are no longer playable, they are disassembled and recycled or offered to artists for their projects. However, the plywood panels are kept as an archive of murals and are often displayed in venues across the city for public enjoyment.
By displaying pianos painted by CSU alumni, the LSC Arts Program aims to connect the CSU community to the greater Fort Collins community through art.
