The Sideshow: Synthesis

Synthesis

September 28th – November 6th, 2026

Sideshow Gallery, Lory Student Center

Art is the visual exploration of the natural world, yet it has been stripped of its scientific merit. During the Renaissance, art was used as a means of exploring and displaying science. Over time, invisible hierarchies and boundaries were drawn, causing art to be separated from its exploratory nature. Contemporary artists are challenging these boundaries by using art as a means to connect scientific disciplines and eliminate barriers. Synthesis explores the intersection of art and STEM fields, re-establishing their important bond.

All art featured in this show has a direct connection to STEM fields, either through process or subject. Examples in this show are soil science, dye-sublimation, mathematic topology and geometry, pigment exploration, scientific illustration, conservation and more.
